‘In October 2023 I wrote in the Solicitors Journal that the legal profession must balance the potential benefits and risks of the widespread use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), but also make sure that future legal professionals have the knowledge to understand it. Law graduates need to dedicate proper attention to digital skills around AI and the ethical considerations that arise from its use, which they need to navigate the law in a society where the use of AI is already ubiquitous. That day is the 6th of June 2025, when the High Court [2025] EWHC 1383 (Admin) reviewed two cases. Both referrals were made due to the actual or suspected use of generative AI to produce several key documents, including false information, fake citations and incorrect quotation attribution, being put before the court.
